Abstract :This paper describes the current situation of Japanese language education in primary and secondary schools, institutions of higher education, private Japanese language schools, Japanese classes offered by local public organizations and volunteer groups and so on in Gifu Prefecture, with special reference to foreigners of Japanese descent, whose mother tongues are Portuguese, Chinese and other languages. The number of pupils necessitating education of Japanese as a foreign language is 567 (including 110 in secondary schools), 448 of whom speak Portuguese and 59 Chinese as of September 1998. The number of schools is 150 (49 secondary schools) and 53 schools have only one such pupil. The total number of international students in universities and colleges is now 442 in Gifu Prefecture, but only four institutions offer classes of Japanese and Japan Studies the undergraduate student can attend for obtaining credits. International exchange associations have been established by local self-governing bodies such as the cities of Gifu, Kagamigahara, Ena, Ogaki, Seki, Minokamo and Kani as well as the town of Yoro, to offer classes in Japanese for foreign residents. Two universities offer program for training teachers of Japanese.
