Abstract :This paper describes the current situation of foreign students in senior high schools in Gifu Prefecture, with special reference to their proficiency in Japanese and Japanese language education. There are two types of foreign students in senior high schools, i.e. regular students (mostly Chinese and Brazilians) who succeeded in the same entrance examination that Japanese students take, and exchange students who come from overseas (Australia, U.S.A. etc.) to spend one year or a shorter period in Japan. The former students are now 30 (in 21 schools) in number, based on the data of the 84 high schools which replied our questionnaire out of 97 schools in the prefecture. With the exception of five Chinese students, they have good proficiency in Japanese. The number of the latter students amounts to 29 (in 22 schools), but their school life depends largely upon their language proficiency. Except for only one student, they do not have enough proficiency in Japanese. This provokes many difficult problems in classes and in communications with Japanese people, and their teachers should make time to improve their Japanese by working together with volunteer citizens.
