Abstract :It is one of the tormenting tasks for research students and graduate students from bverseas to be required to write essays ih Japanese. This paper is a report of the 1999 first semester Japanese for academic purposes class ih the auxiliary Japanese course, which focuses on the construction of the essays. To make readers understand the essays, it is more important to understand the students' opinion than the accuracy of the sentence. In this class, students are not only required to write compositions by the usual composition method, but they are also given tasks to make their opinions clear by taking notes. Before the final draft, they must consider how to compose their essays and discuss it with the teacher. By analyzing their essays, the construction becomes clearer. However, there remains some problems: the lack of the grounds for the student's opnion, the lack of clarity of dembnstrative pronouns. Through this class, some students who were initially reluctant to write essays in Japanese because they were worried about accuracy too much, gain confidence in writing essays in Japanese. This is also the effect of focusing not on the accuracy but on the construction.
